If you have lived in the Treasure Valley long enough, you have probably looked up one September morning and spotted a wall of color rising above the Boise skyline. Hot air balloons drifting over downtown Boise, sometimes directly over the Capitol, sometimes landing in the most unexpected places, are one of those sights that never quite gets old no matter how many times you've seen it. That is the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic, and if you have never made the trip to Ann Morrison Park for it in person, this is the year to change that.

In today's blog, we're going to cover everything you need to know about one of Boise's most beloved annual events, including what to expect, what not to miss, and some practical tips to make your visit as smooth as possible.

What Is the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic?

The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic has a long, award-winning history in Boise. The first gathering of balloons in Ann Morrison Park took place in June of 1991, originally as the Boise River Festival Hot Air Balloon Rally. When the Boise River Festival ended, the tradition of hot air ballooning in the park continued, and in 2010 it became the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic. 

2026 marks the 35th anniversary of the event, now officially named the Scott Spencer Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic in honor of its founder, who passed away in early 2020. His love of ballooning and the energy he brought to the event is still very much felt each year. 

Hosted annually at Ann Morrison Park, the event brings together locals and visitors who enjoy being surrounded by colorful balloons, live music, and the energy of Boise's favorite local radio stations all in one place. It is free to attend the morning launches, which makes it one of the best free family events in Boise all year. 

What Not to Miss

If you can only make it to one day, Friday's Nite Glow is the answer for most people. The image of dozens of illuminated hot air balloons glowing in the dark at Ann Morrison Park is the kind of thing that ends up as your phone wallpaper for the next six months.

If you are coming with kids, Wednesday's Kid's Day is the clear winner. The free tethered balloon rides are a first-come, first-served offering, so get there when the gates open. The energy of a field full of inflating balloons with children running around trying to take it all in is one of the best Boise family experiences of the year.

For photographers and early risers, Sunday's dawn patrol is worth setting the alarm for. Hot air balloons rising in the dark over Boise before sunrise is a once-a-year shot.

Practical Tips Before You Go

A few things that will make your visit noticeably better:

It is usually chilly first thing in the morning even in early September. Experienced balloon fans dress in layers and shed them as the day warms up. The grass in the park is typically wet with overnight dew right after sunrise, so waterproof shoes are a good idea, especially for younger kids. 

The pilots are happy to take photos with you next to a balloon or basket. Just ask first, and do not step into a balloon without permission from the pilot or crew chief. 

Leave dogs at home. The burners that power hot air balloons produce a sound that is painful to a dog's sensitive ears, even when it is inaudible to humans. It is the same reason dogs react when a balloon passes overhead. 

Drones are absolutely not permitted on the premises by FAA regulation. 

All launches are weather permitting, typically starting at 7:15 a.m. and lasting until as late as 9:00 a.m. You can frequently see the hot air balloons soaring over downtown Boise, with the occasional balloon landing on historic landmarks, building rooftops, right in the middle of Broadway Avenue, and even the front lawn of the Capitol building. Half the fun is watching where they end up. 

Parking near Ann Morrison Park during the event fills up quickly. Plan to arrive early or use alternative parking nearby and walk in. The park is also right off the Boise River Greenbelt, so biking in is a genuinely good option if you live close enough.
