We often think of the different rooms we have to clean in our home and what we have to do in order to get them where we want them to be, especially during the holiday season, but we don’t often think of the order in which we should be cleaning those rooms. In today’s article, we’re going to talk about exactly that and how the order in which you clean the rooms in your home can have a positive impact on the overall cleaning process, leaving you with the most valuable thing of all: more time spent NOT cleaning. Enjoy!

Why the Cleaning Order Matters

Cleaning order matters because it helps you not have to redo work or accidently double up on cleaning duties that have already been done. For instance, if you vacuum before you dust or clean high up surfaces, you risk getting dust bunnies, dirt from countertops and other areas on the carpet as you clean, which means that you will have to vacuum your carpets all over again if you want them to stay clean. Doing things in the most efficient and methodical manner ensures that you have to do less work and that you avoid doubling or tripling up on tasks that should only be done once.

Declutter Every Room And Surface Before You Even Start To Clean

If you really want to be the most efficient when it comes to cleaning your home, you will need to start with a little cleaning in EACH room. Go around the house, starting in the most cluttered room and pick up anything that is on the floor, or on countertops or desks that shouldn’t be there. We’re talking things like:

  • Dirty clothes
  • Dishes or food items
  • Shoes
  • Backpacks or sports gear
  • Dirty dishes (in the kitchen, aka do the dishes before cleaning the kitchen so you can scrub the countertops)
  • Children’s toys and clutter
  • Mail clutter
  • Books or magazines out of place

Once everything is picked up and put away, it is time to start cleaning.

Start Cleaning In The Dirtiest Rooms First

You always want to start in the dirtiest rooms so that as you clean and get more tired and worn out, your cleaning gets easier and easier. This typically means starting in either the bathrooms or kitchen and going from there.

Always Clean From Top To Bottom, AKA From High Up To Floors

This is a big one. You always want to start cleaning high up places first before even thinking of breaking out the vacuum or broom. As things like dust and crumbs and other debris fall from the high up places, it will typically land on the floor or carpet. If you save your sweeping and vacuuming for last, then you are guaranteed to get everything in one pass.
