If you have school-aged kids, then their winter break can be a time of much fun but also a little foreboding. After the initial joy of Christmas wears off, it gets pretty hard to entertain your school aged kids during their long (and seemingly longer every year?) winter break. In today’s article, we’re going to help you plan some fun activities that you and your family can enjoy this winter break, or anytime you’re feeling up for a little fun and adventure out of the house.
The Discovery Center is always a fantastic place to spend an afternoon with the family. They always have fantastic and exciting exhibits that are always changing. Currently, you can explore their Going Places exhibit which is an immersive, hands-on exhibition that explores how transportation has shaped society, technology, and human connection. With 17 interactive exhibits and eight informational kiosks, visitors can experience travel like never before—flying a plane, racing a recumbent bicycle, riding a hovercraft, or learning to pilot an airship. Each exhibit puts visitors in the driver’s seat while showcasing the innovations that move people across the world every day. Beyond the mechanics of travel, the exhibit highlights how transportation influences culture and social progress, while offering a glimpse into emerging technologies that will define the future of movement.
Zoo Boise is an inexpensive and memorable way to entertain the kids for an afternoon or more. Sometimes it’s difficult to take in the whole zoo in a day, which means you can come back again to get the full experience. They are offering day passes at massive discounts during winter break! Get your tickets before January 1st to see the discount. Adult tickets are on sale for just $3!
All during Christmas break, you can take the family to the famous Indian Creek Plaza in Downtown Caldwell. They have over 1 million lights on display throughout their picturesque walkway. While you’re there, you can go ice skating in their outdoor ice rink or you can get some hot cocoa, do some shopping, or grab a stellar pizza over at Keystone Pizza. Try their pepperoni, it is unlike anything else in the valley!
Many annual events publish their schedules months in advance. Planning ahead helps secure tickets, reserve parking, and coordinate busy family calendars.
Pair outdoor activities with nearby dining or shopping to create full-day experiences. For example, enjoy the Greenbelt in the morning and head to a local café (we recommend Java downtown or off 13th!) for lunch afterward.
