It’s important to clean your computer regularly and spring is as good a time as any. When focusing on your cleaning routine, incorporating a few cleaning tips regarding your computer monitor, keyboard, and mouse may also help your health as well. Freeing your computer from dust also helps it run better and cooler.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind when cleaning your computer.

Check the Manufacturer’s Cleaning Instructions

The manufacturer of your computer, laptop, and/or monitor may offer cleaning suggestions either in the manual that came with the computer or online. Check there first before cleaning for any special recommendations or tips.

Turn Everything Off

You’ll want to make sure to turn everything off on your computer. Safety first! Before you get started cleaning any electrical appliance of any sort you should switch it off and make sure you unplug it and disconnect any cables.

Careful When Using a Cleaning Cloth

Do not use just any kind of cloth when cleaning your computer. A microfiber cloth works best because it doesn’t produce lint. You’ll want to make sure whatever cloth your using does not scratch the computer and its monitor. In fact, it may even be a good idea to use canned air to blow out any vents or ports and the keyboard on the computer. Just look out for large puffs of dust and continue to blow air until you no longer see dust coming out from your computer.

Wipe Gently in a Circular Motion

Use a dry, safe cloth to swipe across the computer screen to remove any initial dirt. Then use a damp cloth and clean in a circular motion to address any stains or hard to get at spots. Do not spray water directly onto your computer and do not saturate the cloth with water either.

Steer Clear of Cleaning Solutions

Cleaning solutions could be too strong for the computer and monitor, so we do not recommend you use them when cleaning and that includes the keyboard and mouse as well. Make no exceptions to using any all-purpose household cleaners on your computer including window cleaner. If you try using screen wipes made specifically to clean the computer be careful and try it on a small area first. Also, make sure there is no alcohol in the wipes if you do use them.

Leave the Cleaning to a Professional

As you can see there is a lot to remember when cleaning your computer and keeping it in the best working condition. Keyboards especially should be cleaned quite frequently because they easily attract germs. It can be difficult to manage this kind of maintenance on a regular basis alone, especially if you have an office with multiple computers.
