How To Clean Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is a classic for a reason! It is timeless and looks incredible, when it’s clean, that is. Here are some tips for keeping your hardwood looking great all year round.

Do’s for Hardwood Floors

  • Sweep or dust mop daily to remove grit and debris that can scratch the surface.
  • Use a microfiber mop lightly dampened with a hardwood-specific cleaner, never soaking wet.
  • Clean up spills immediately by blotting (not rubbing) with a dry cloth.
  • Use felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratching.
  • Add area rugs in high-traffic zones for extra protection.

Don’ts for Hardwood Floors

  • Never use a soaking wet mop or steam cleaner, excess moisture is the enemy.
  • Avoid vinegar, bleach, or ammonia-based cleaners, which can strip the finish.
  • Don’t use abrasive scrubbers or steel wool.
  • Skip the all-purpose sprays unless they’re specifically labeled safe for hardwood.

Tile Floor Cleaning Best Practices

Tile flooring is tough and durable, but it can get dirty in between the tiles. Here are some ways in which you can keep your whole floor clean, not just the tiles themselves!

Do’s for Tile Floors

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove loose dirt before mopping.
  • Mop with warm water and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner.
  • Scrub grout lines with a stiff brush and a baking soda paste or grout-specific cleaner.
  • Rinse thoroughly after mopping to avoid leaving a soapy residue.
  • Seal grout lines once or twice a year to prevent staining and moisture absorption.

Don’ts for Tile Floors

  • Avoid highly acidic cleaners (like undiluted vinegar) on natural stone tile, they can etch the surface.
  • Don’t use steel wool or abrasive pads that can scratch glazed tile.
  • Skip oil-based cleaners that leave a slippery residue.

Carpet Flooring Cleaning Tips

Carpet adds comfort and warmth to any room, but it’s also a magnet for dust, allergens, pet dander, and stains. Regular maintenance is key to keeping carpet fresh, hygienic, and long-lasting.

Do’s for Carpet

  • Vacuum at least twice a week in high-traffic areas (and weekly in lower-traffic rooms).
  • Treat spills immediately, blot from the outside in to prevent spreading.
  • Use a carpet-specific stain remover for tough spots.
  • Rotate furniture periodically to prevent uneven wear.
  • Schedule professional steam cleaning every 12–18 months.

Don’ts for Carpet

  • Don’t rub stains, it pushes them deeper into the fibers.
  • Avoid using too much water when spot-cleaning, which can lead to mold underneath.
  • Don’t wait too long to treat stains, the longer they sit, the harder they are to remove.
  • Skip the deodorizing powders unless you’re able to vacuum them thoroughly; leftover residue builds up over time.

Vinyl Floors: Low-Maintenance but Easy to Damage

Vinyl flooring or LVP is really popular these days for good reason! It is durable and relatively easy to clean, but only if you do it the right way. Here’s how.

Do’s for Vinyl Floors

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly using a soft-bristle attachment.
  • Damp mop with warm water and a vinyl-safe floor cleaner.
  • Use a soft microfiber mop for best results.
  • Clean up spills quickly, while vinyl is water-resistant, standing water can seep into seams and cause issues.
  • Use doormats at entryways to minimize dirt and grit.

Don’ts for Vinyl Floors

  • Avoid abrasive scrubbers or stiff brushes that can scratch the surface.
  • Don’t use wax-based products, vinyl doesn’t need waxing and it can create buildup.
  • Skip steam mops, which can warp or loosen vinyl planks.
  • Avoid bleach or "mop and shine" products not designed specifically for vinyl.
