Spring in the Treasure Valley is one of the best times of year. The sun is out, the days are getting longer, and after a long winter, natural light pouring through clean windows just hits differently. The only problem? Idaho's spring weather has a way of making window cleaning feel like a losing battle. One day it's dry and dusty, the next a gusty wind rolls through, coating everything in a fresh layer of grime, and then just when you think you've got a handle on it, a spring rain leaves water spots all over the glass you just cleaned.
Sound familiar? In today's blog, we're going to cover some tried and true tips to help you keep your windows spotless this spring…even with Idaho weather doing its best to work against you.
Before you grab a spray bottle and a paper towel, it helps to know what you're actually dealing with.
Idaho's high desert climate means the air is dry and carries fine dust particles, especially when the wind picks up. That dust settles on your windows continuously, and because there's so little humidity most of the time, it bonds to the glass and is harder to wipe away cleanly than it looks. Then spring brings sporadic rain, which sounds like it should help but often makes things worse. Rainwater picks up pollen, dirt, and airborne debris on its way down, depositing all of it in streaks and spots across your glass.
Knowing this helps you clean smarter rather than just harder.
This is the step most people skip, and it's the reason so many window cleanings end in streaks. If you spray cleaner directly onto a dusty window, you're turning that dry dust into a muddy paste that smears across the glass. Instead, start by knocking the loose debris off first.
Use a soft dry microfiber cloth, a dry squeegee, or even a clean paintbrush to sweep dust off the glass surface and out of the corners before applying any cleaner. This one habit alone makes a noticeable difference in the final result.
A good glass cleaner or a simple solution of dish soap and water works great for most windows. Distilled water is even better if you have access to it, since tap water contains minerals that can leave faint residue behind as it dries, something that shows up especially well in direct sunlight.
Paper towels are convenient, but they tend to leave lint and streaks on glass. A clean microfiber cloth or a quality squeegee will give you a much cleaner result with less effort. If you're using a squeegee, wipe the blade with a clean cloth after each pass so you're not dragging dirty water back across the glass.
In Idaho, timing matters. Cleaning your windows on a hot, sunny afternoon might seem like the right move, but direct sunlight causes your cleaner to evaporate too quickly, which leads to streaks before you even get to wipe them off. Aim for an overcast morning or early evening when the temperature is mild and the sun isn't directly hitting the glass.
Also keep an eye on the wind forecast. Cleaning your windows the day before a big windstorm just means redoing the job in 24 hours. Spring winds in the valley can carry a surprising amount of dust, so try to pick a calm stretch of days when you know you'll get a few days of clear weather to enjoy the results.
Clean glass with a dirty frame and screen is only half the job. Window tracks collect a remarkable amount of debris over the winter months. Think dead insects, dust, moisture residue, and all of it sits there until it gets dealt with.
Use a vacuum with a narrow attachment to pull debris out of the tracks first, then follow up with a damp cloth to wipe them clean. Screens deserve attention too. A dirty screen blocks light and airflow, and every time the wind blows through it, it pushes that built-up grime right back onto your clean glass. Remove screens when you can, rinse them gently with a hose, and let them dry completely before reinstalling.
One deep clean at the start of spring is great, but Idaho's dust and wind are relentless. A quick wipe-down of the most visible windows every few weeks goes a long way toward keeping things looking fresh without turning it into a big project each time. The more consistently you stay on top of it, the less work any single session takes.
